Women in Motion Talks - Final

Now is good moment to do the final installment of the Women in Motion Talks as there were more videos with some very interesting people talking about women and the film industry.

Frances McDormand discusses sexism and gender discrimination in Hollywood (5/22/15)

None other than recently married Frances McDormand, in Cannes with husband Joel Coen, had a conversation with Alison Brower, THR deputy editorial director. Here are some excerpts from the conversation.

�I haven�t been given that,� she said. Earlier in the conversation, when one audience member cited Meryl Streep as an actress that can command a male-sized salary, McDormand countered: �I doubt that she has ever been paid commensurately with the male movie stars she�s worked with." She also noted that as an actor, she has received her going quote only once, on Transformers 3, and even that was less than a male actor of similar status� rate.

�We�re keeping the conversation back a little bit by saying we need help. We don�t need help, we need money. We need platforms, we need voices, but we don�t need help,� she said.

�One of the reasons I am successful as a producer is that I�ve been a very successful housewife. All the skills of housewifery are the ones I�m using as a producer. I don�t mean that facetiously because it�s a f�ing job, it�s a hard job.�



Golshifteh Farahani on Living Life Under Oppression In Iran (5/20/15)

Golshifteh Farahani and Anne-Dominique Toussaint, the star and producer of Les Deux Amis talked with Alison Brower, THR deputy editorial director. They talk about nudity (Cesars incident) plus more. Some excerpts of a THR article with a headline that reads "The Iranian star of 'Les Deux Amis' is poised to become an international star with her role in the next 'Pirates of the Caribbean' installment."

�I don�t want to do anything political but anything I do it becomes political. Like Lea Seydoux, if she is not wearing the veil, or she�s naked or she�s doing whatever it�s just art, there�s no problem in it. But if I�m walking it becomes a political walk.�

�I think there is a problem in France that anyone who is not European you want to know where they come from and why do they come from somewhere or why they speak English or why they are human,� Farahani said. �That�s the big barrier for all of us that are coming from some far, far away countries. But at the end of the day we are all artists.�



Isabelle Huppert et Sylvie Pialat � �Women in motion� : le sexisme, quel sexisme? (5/19/15)


Available only in French, perhaps one of the most interesting talks (if not THE most) was between Isabelle Huppert, Sylvie Pialat and Le Figaro. Here are some excerpts in English.

Only 7% of directors in France are women. It's a figure that speaks volumes and emphasises women's under-representation in the film industry. For producer Sylvie Pialat, there are no "r�alisatrices" (the feminine plural form of "r�alisateur", French for "director"). Rather, there are "femmes-r�alisateurs", "women directors", because they operate in a man's world. During her long and illustrious career, Isabelle Huppert has worked with many men, including Claude Chabrol, Beno�t Jacquot and Fran�ois Ozon.

The actress believes it's easier to be a woman in front of the camera: "...a male actor has a greater tendency to interfere in the directing. An actress knows how to be passive and active at the same time...During my career, I haven't experienced discrimination for the simple and valid reason that I've always played women; it would be impossible for men to take these roles from me." The actress alludes to the characters she'd like to play: "I think I'd like to act a man's part, quite simply. A policeman maybe." She adds "I'd like to see us rise to the challenge of comparing two films without saying which was made by a man and which by a woman. I can guarantee no-one would know the difference now!" She goes on to say, "I can spot misogyny quite quickly; it's sometimes insidious".
