Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chlo Grace Moretz and Dennis Quaid announced the nominees for the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards. They were joined by Miss Golden Globe, Corinne Foxx, Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) President, Lorenzo Soria, and Executive VP of Television at dick clark productions, Barry Adelman.
The first snub that upset me, Carol not getting a Screenplay nomination but then film got a nomination in ALL major categories that could be nominated. As a mater of fact, Carol leads the pack with five (5) nominations followed closely by The Big Short, The Revenant and Steve Jobs with 4 each.
My most pleasant surprise came when Rooney Mara was announced in the Best Actress category as in my opinion she really deserves the Best Actress nomination, perhaps even more than Cate Blanchett. We know that unfortunately TWC is promoting Mara as supporting actress but we also know that she has a leading role that already gave her the most prestigious Cannes Palme d'Or for Best Actress. Also pleasantly surprised with Alicia Vikander being recognize with a lead performance in The Danish Girl. No doubt that the Best Actress - Drama category has become very hard to guess and more to select the best performance as all five have outstanding performances.
Seems that this year there is only ONE BIG complain (usually there are many) and as usual is the criteria behind what HFPA considers comedy, this time is The Martian which we know is a drama but they had no room left in the drama category, so went to comedy, sigh. But this kind of action usually kills film possibilities for an Oscar nomination, nevertheless this year Ridley Scott got a nomination so maybe The Martian chances are still full alive.
Impossible not to comment that Johnny Depp needs to revive his career as even this press group, whom in the past gave him nominations for silly performances in not so-good movies, ignored his performance in Black Mass. He was good in that movie, perhaps as good as he was in his early films.

To check official announcement (is a pdf file) plus nominees in TV categories go here or here. Believe the BIG winner from the nominations is Netflix that has only 1 nomination in Motion Picture categories but is the leader in Television categories with 8 for a total of 9 nominations; only 20th Century Fox has more nominations (12) than Netflix! Somehow data speaks about the high quality of Netflix original programming, a fact that I absolutely approve as been able to enjoy really great shows from Netflix.
Last, on the very superficial non-cinema related side of the TV show that will take place next January 10th, 2016, the Red Carpet this year will be FABULOUS with the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Alicia Vikander, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Rooney Mara, Helen Mirren, Lilly Tomlin, Saoirse Ronan, Viola Davis, Caitriona Balfe, Eva Green, Robin Wright, Taraji P. Henson, and Michael Fassbender (of course!!! lol!).
